FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Girl Scouts Esteemed Bronze & Silver Awards Recognize Young Women for Their Dedication, Hard Work and Community Impact

LEXINGTON, Ky. – September 9, 2020– Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road (GSKWR) has designed a new, innovative ‘drive-in ceremony’ to recognize 100 young women from 66 Kentucky counties with two of Girl Scouts highest levels of achievement – the Bronze Award and Silver Award. Girl Scouting’s highest awards program represents girls’ dedication to making a difference for people in areas such as social services, healthcare, and education, among others. The GSKWR Drive-In Bronze & Silver Highest Award Ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 12 at 10:30AM at Camp Shawano (3775 Newman Road, Lexington, KY 40515). Similar to a drive-in theatre, guests will be invited to attend and watch the ceremony live from the comfort of their own vehicles. Audio will be provided with a large outdoor speaker. The ceremony will also be live-streamed on the GSKWR Facebook page (@KYGirlScouts).

Girl Scouting’s highest awards program gives girls unique opportunities to reach out to others in need, both locally and globally. The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior in grades 4 - 5 can achieve. Girls and their teams plan and complete a 20+ hour Take Action Project to make a difference in the community. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette in grades 6 - 8 can earn and fosters the skills necessary to design and implement a project that will have a lasting impact on the community, requiring a 50+ hour Take Action Project completed individually or in a small group. “Through our Girl Scout highest awards program girls begin to know themselves better and realize that they’re truly capable of doing remarkable things and making a real impact, said Susan Douglas, GSKWR’s CEO. “The skills, passions, and competencies fostered through our awards program are lifelong,” she added.

Saturday’s drive-in ceremony will include a presentation of the Bronze & Silver Awards and messages from GSKWR’s CEO Susan Douglas; COO, Ruby Webster; and Board President, Kathleen Regan. The ceremony will begin at 10:30AM; vehicles will be permitted to enter beginning at 9:30AM. The event’s location, Camp Shawano, is GSKWR’s 142-acre camp property located in Jessamine County, Kentucky.
