PETS IN NEED OF GREATER CINCINNATI RECEIVES $10,000 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES® FOR PET SURRENDER PREVENTION IN CINCINNATI, OHIO
November 28, 2017
CINCINNATI, OH – November 28, 2017 – Pets In Need of Greater Cincinnati has received a $10,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. While most grants to Pets In Need are designed to help pets currently enrolled for services at the animal welfare agency’s clinic, the new grant is aimed at preventing owner surrender of pets at SPCA Cincinnati through intake diversion practices which include the provision of free veterinary care and pet food. These tactics will ultimately help to reduce pet homelessness in Greater Cincinnati while keeping pets at home with the people and families who love them.
Two of the most common reasons pets are surrendered to local shelters are due to financial difficulties and pet health issues. Pet parents with limited access to affordable veterinary care often have no choice but to surrender a pet that is ill. With this grant, Pets In Need of Greater Cincinnati will support pets and pet parents in need by providing required veterinary care including basic wellness services, treatment of acute and chronic health issues, monthly preventatives and spay/neuter. The organization will also offer free pet food to pet parents who may need a little help feeding their pet from time to time.
"We are thankful for the generosity of PetSmart Charities and look forward to seeing the impact this grant will have in reducing owner-surrenders at SPCA Cincinnati. Support of this nature allows the pets of low-income families to stay healthy, fed and together with the people who love them," said Ann Hill, Executive Director of Pets In Need of Greater Cincinnati.
Historically, funding to support emerging best practices like intake diversion programming has been hard to come by in animal welfare. That’s why PetSmart Charities identified this as an area of great need, both for animal welfare organizations and for pet parents across North America, and developed this new grant category. The grant to Pets In Need is one of the first of its kind made by PetSmart Charities.
Intake Diversion is just one of PetSmart Charities’ ten grant categories designed to support their expanded mission: to find lifelong loving homes for all pets by supporting programs that bring people and pets together. Funding from PetSmart Charities supports best practices and thought leadership that enhance the human-animal bond and keep more pets in loving homes and forever families.
